How to study for your water treatment operator certification exam

how to study for water treatment operator certification exam

The following paragraphs summarize my recommendation for studying for the exam.

  • Take an online course

First, take an online course offered by your favorite instructor, and get familiar with the content of Water Treatment Plant Operation, Volumes 1 and 2, which are published by Sacramento State University.

The more you become familiar with the content of these books, the more likely you’ll pass the exam.  The exam questions are derived from these two books.

  • Practice exams

Get your hands on some practice exams that are based on actual exams, and work through them.  I recommend going through each practice exam without timing yourself.  You can get practice exams at this link.

When you’re studying for the test, it’s more important that you learn and understand the concepts behind each problem, rather than try to finish it in three hours.

If you get a question wrong, use the index in Sacramento State’s books to locate the page that explains the concept, and read the topic until you truly understand it.

Test your knowledge with these practice questions.  See how you perform.  Click here for practice questions.

  • Don’t memorize

My approach is a time-consuming way to study, but it’s the best way.  Don’t try to memorize the questions and answers from these practice exams.

You’ll do much better on the exam by spending the time to learn the subject, rather than memorizing the answers.

And don’t try any of the problems until you completed your online course.

You’ll get more out of these practice exams if you understand the fundamentals of each topic, instead of attempting them without any prior knowledge.

  • Start studying early

I often meet people who begin studying for their test a few days before the exam.  To me, I find it unbelievable.

Whatever you do, don’t procrastinate.  Start studying early.  The sooner you start, the more likely you’ll pass your exam.  Keep in mind that you only get to study during the weekends, and weeknights.

That only adds up to several hours per week.  So start now, if you know that you have an exam coming up.  Don’t put it off.  Otherwise, you’ll probably have to re-take the exam again.
